I think I kind of figured it out. While there is no support in wss/moss, there is a workaround.

Tag your "no-crawl"-content with the tag of your choise and write a http filter to remove the tagged content. Write a user control or a web part that applies this filter to the "Response.Filter" only if the current user is the "crawl-user".

Tada!

I am looking for the same thing.
What if I have a page with a menu on the left (that I don't want to index) and it has content in the middle that I want to index?

There has to be a way that MOSS can do partial page indexing...??

Google has this abiltiy. You can surround sections of a page with
<!-- googleoff: index -->
content to be excluded from search
<!-- googleon: index -->

Is there nothing similar for MOSS?

Thanks,

Kent

Do you possibly know of a way to exclude a certain section of the page from being crawled?

Say, there is a menu (which incidently includes commonly searched words) in the master page.

I'm looking for something like a tag to put around it.
For example:

my menu content

I implemented this script, but it pops the window up for every subpath of the domain. Is there a way to create the cookie at the root and not have it popup for every subsite?

Thank you,
Lon

Perhaps easier: while viewing the library select "Open with Windows Explorer" from the View menu. In explorer simply rename the document library folder. Seems to work well!

I am on a project where we are converting words documents to webpages. We are running into a catch though, it appears only a site sollection administrator can convert word documents to webpages. Is this correct? We would like to have individuals with access right of approver / contributor to perform this function. Any ideas?

Hi,

It was great reading your blog. But I need you to help profer a solution. My name is Tyrin-J Osimen and an IT consultant here in Nigeria.

I am convincing a client to use SharePoint to manage there business processes and they seem to be listening. They have asked me to do a POC, which I am currently working on using ASP.NET forms. Well, so far so good until i just hit a snag in the underlying worklow. I am building the workflow using Visual Studio 2008. I noticed that when VS deploys the workflow, it completes prematurely after it has been initiated by a list item created programaticaly.

The workflow is such that a task is created (CreatTaskWithContentType) after the workflow is activated. The task is created quite alright by the workflow because it is in the task list with it's status indicating that the task has not been started. When I check the status of the workflow on the list it is attached, the status indicates that the workflow has completed even though I have not edited the task.

I have checked the corelation tokens and taskid assigned to the task, they are okay. Please do you know what the issue might be as I am runing out of time. I have less than a week to show my POC.

Thanks

I too am interested in a way to set quotas on the document library rather than the entire site collection. Seems crappy to allow EVERYBODY to upload large files of any type just because you need one library that does this. I have a customer who wants to do this, but to write an event handler to do this seems overkill.

Thanks for a great article! We had users with permissions to a sub site but not to the top site in the site collection. Adding read permissions to the web part gallery in the site collection solved the issue. Thanks again!

This was a fantastic resource! I had a sub site with unique permissions from the parent. So, the web parts that are hosted on the parent site were not available to the owner of the sub site.

Once I added that person to the Visitors group of the parent site (which has view rights to the web parts library) they could see all of the web parts.

Thanks!

Hi! Need advice. There is no one else to ask. My credit is bad (very bad) and I am eager to apply for a card. And I have found two variants for me at one website: secured credit cards and unsecured cards for bad credit. I’d like to make the right choice therefore I am searching for advice or experience. And hope that you answer me as soon as possible.

I am not trying to get to the GAC to add or remove assemblies but actually trying to open up GAC like a normal windows explorer folder so I can actually get to the underlying folder structure that GAC functions on.

This is required when you want to update app config files and so on. I should have made it more clear!

Before you make the decision on how to make money with this credit card be sure to read the fine print. Can you get cashback for shopping at ANY supermarket or drugstore? Most of banks work with particular stores. Read all the details at

Nice web part! I wanted to deploy but noticed two things:
1. (as you mention) Divide by zero exception is thrown when there is no quota.
2. If the collection is over its quota, the background image displays more than once and wraps back to green on the right edge.

Here's the changes I made to overcome this:
    public class SiteQuotaWebPart : System.Web.UI.WebControls.WebParts.WebPart
    {
        private int quotaUse = 0;
        private bool hasQuota = false;

        private void CalculateQuotaUse()
        {
            SPSite siteCollection = SPContext.Current.Site;
            SPSecurity.RunWithElevatedPrivileges(delegate()
            {
                using (SPSite elevatedSiteCollection = new SPSite(siteCollection.ID))
                {
                    this.hasQuota = elevatedSiteCollection.Quota.StorageMaximumLevel > 0;
                    if(hasQuota)
                        this.quotaUse = Convert.ToInt32(elevatedSiteCollection.Usage.Storage * 100 / elevatedSiteCollection.Quota.StorageMaximumLevel);
                }
            });
        }

        private int QuotaImageWidth(int quotaUse)
        {
            return quotaUse > 100 ? 200 : quotaUse * 2;
        }

        protected override void Render(HtmlTextWriter writer)
        {
            this.CalculateQuotaUse();
            if (this.hasQuota)
            {
                writer.Write(".QG {background-image: url('/_layouts/images/QuotaGradient.jpg');}");
                writer.Write(" ");
                writer.Write("Quota Used: " + this.quotaUse + "%");

Hi!

The page-parameter "ControlMode=Edit" also works perfectly on Publishing Pages (Article Pages) as long as the page is checked out to the current user.

I fortunately managed to figure out this on my own, but I'd like to know where you got this information from, and if there exists other page-parameters that could be useful.

Thx

Good points. I agree. The issue with certifications, I find, is that employers when recruiting will find a potential employee more appealing with certificates over some one without even if they have the same level of experience. In a lot of cases they are just as good as each other but one has had the money to afford the exams.

Recruiting is difficult I know but a lot of really good developers are over looked for that very reason.

Did you had any of the following crossing through your mind (or as part of any of your past experiences):
1. How much space does a single site occupies? (appliable at any sub-site...not only site collection
2. How much a Document library, or any particular list, disk space occupies?

Thank you kindly for any information!

I am unable to see 'audit log reports on my piblishing portal site collection. Should i turn on the reporting feature. Ok hang on .. Well, i even can't see the site collection features link on my site settings page. Can you tell me where i can find this on my MOSS 2007 (trial) installation. Or is this feature not available on trail version?

I think it's a deliberate overlook rather than a miss. A delete event wont help as it does nothing good to the UI. You can override a page but that won't be supported.

The technique I am purposing does nothing of the two.

Rai, nice insight into this issue mate.

sitedeleted event can be written, which actually checks the logged in user role and can direct him to the top site. But stil, there is a problem of deleting the root site.

How did MS miss such thing?
